Freshwater programs

Healthy communities begin with empowered residents. HEART members strive to facilitate access to resources and meaningful opportunities for community members to work together to protect clean water in their own homes and neighborhoods.

  • The WSU Detroit River Walkers program equips groups of “walkers” from the community to engage and educate their peers to promote safe consumption of Detroit River fish in areas where traditional fish consumption advisories have proven largely ineffective. The walkers talk to people fishing in the river, answer questions, and distribute Michigan Department of Community Health’s Eat Safe Fish. The materials can be viewed at www.michigan.gov/eatsafefish.
