What WIC provides?

WIC can help with food, breastfeeding, health insurance navigation, housing, car seat safety and more. See details below.

What types of foods does WIC provide?

Foods for infants (birth-12 months)

The WIC Program strongly encourages and provides support for breastfeeding. For babies who are not fully breastfed, iron-fortified infant formula is available for the first year of life. The Michigan WIC program contracts with one formula company to provide formula at a reduced price. Standard infant formulas available from the Michigan WIC program are: Similac Advance, Similac Sensitive, Similac Soy Isomil, and Similac Total Comfort.

Infants with a specific medical diagnosis and documentation may receive a special formula prescribed by their doctor. Visit the Michigan WIC program for a list of special formulas available.

At six months, infants may also receive infant cereal and infant fruits and vegetables. Infants that are fully breastfed may also receive infant meats.

Foods for women and children

Pregnant and postpartum women and children (under five years of age) participating in WIC receive food benefits for milk, cheese, eggs, cereals, peanut butter or dried/canned beans or peas, fruit or vegetable juices, fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains. Women who exclusively breastfeed their babies may also receive extra food, including canned tuna fish and canned salmon.

Special formulas or nutritional supplements are also available to participating women and children who have certain medical conditions.

If your doctor thinks you or your child requires a special formula or special diet, have the doctor complete this form. Bring this form to the WIC office or have the doctor fax it to 586-783-0965.
