Free tax preparation

Macomb County Veterans Services is an IRS VITA (volunteer income tax assistance) partner, a 50-year-old federal tax preparation assistance program that provides support to low-income families, persons with disabilities, ITINS, and limited English-speaking taxpayers. To be eligible for this service, your annual family income must be below $63,000 a year. This program provides tax support to all Michigan residents.

The program is open during the regular tax season from January 27, 2024 - April 15, 2024.  There are 3 ways to receive tax preparations: 

  1. By appointment at 8 locations (Fill up quickly)
  2. Drop off 
  3. Walk ins

We also offer extended tax services from April 16, 2024 - September 30, 2024 by appointment only.  

Before going to a VITA site, see Publication 3676-B for services provided and check out what to bring to ensure you have all the required documents and information volunteers will need to help you.

Volunteers still needed:

It's not too late! Individuals wishing to volunteer through this initiative are asked to have the following abilities/qualities:

  • Basic computer skills and familiar with adobe acrobat
  • Basic knowledge of filing personal income taxes
  • Friendly and personable
  • No felony arrest or convictions
  • Current driver’s license or state identification card
  • Can commit to one 4-6 hour shift per week

The 12-week program will run from January 27 to April 15, 2024, operating out of 8 locations across the County, with the main hub at the VerKuilen Building 21885 Dunham Road Clinton Township, MI 48036. Day shifts, 6 days a week are available. 

The following training will be provided:

  • Basic federal tax law training
  • Advanced federal tax law training
  • State law training
  • Standards of conduct and ethics
