Lock it up!

Marijuana products need to be locked up for the safety of those not authorized or of the legal age to use it.

Safe storage

  • Marijuana products, especially edibles, can be mistaken for regular food or candy.
  • Increasing numbers of children under nine years old have been to an emergency room or hospitalized after accidentally consuming marijuana. Help prevent these accidents among children by storing your marijuana products safely and securely.
  • Be sure to keep all marijuana products in child-resistant packaging, clearly labeled and locked up.
  • Keep marijuana in the child-resistant packaging it came in.
  • Make sure your children can’t see or reach the locked cabinet or box.
  • How you store marijuana should change as children get older. Safe storage around young children may not stop older children or teens.

Accidental marijuana use

  • Eating or drinking marijuana can make children very sick. They may have problems walking or sitting up, have a hard time breathing or start to feel sleepy.
  • If you’re worried about your child, call the poison control hotline at 800-222-1222 as soon as possible. Calling is free and you’ll be helped quickly.
  • If a reaction seems bad, call 911 or go to an emergency room right away.
  • Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug in the United States, and its use and potency have increased in recent years.
