Five members of the Ethics Board are nominated by Macomb County Executive, subject to approval by the Board of Commissioners, to serve on this independent oversight board to ensure public confidence in the integrity of county government.
All Macomb County public servants (elected officials, appointed officials, employees) are expected to model and maintain high standards of ethical conduct at all times.
Members of the Ethics Board are qualified Macomb County electors, appointed to serve for staggered terms without compensation and have not been employed by Macomb County as public servants for the preceding two years (if ever).

Karen SmithBoard Member
Karen Smith has been the Executive Director for Leadership Macomb since 2007. Leadership Macomb is a nonprofit organization that educates individuals on the assets and issues in Macomb County through its unique, experiential 10-month program. Since 1996 over 1,460 individuals have graduated from the program. Under Karen’s direction, the organization has grown in terms of revenue, participants and programming. In 2013, she developed and implemented a program for high school juniors to help prepare them for life after high school, Junior Leadership Macomb. Since inception, over 360 students have gone through the Junior Leadership Macomb program.
Prior to Leadership Macomb, Karen was the Director of Marketing and Public relations for a hospital in the Henry Ford Health System. There she led a successful rebranding campaign and developed marketing strategies to increase return on investment for specific programs.
She received her bachelor’s degree in marketing from Oakland University and her master’s degree in management from Walsh College. She is active in the community through her involvement in Kiwanis and teaching occasionally at MCC. Karen was inducted into the Macomb Foundation Hall of Fame in 2021.
Karen enjoys reading, volunteering, spending time with friends and taking her rescue dog, Cooper to the local dog park. She loves her twin daughters and visits them whenever possible in Chicago and Navarre, Florida.

Bobbie Remias - SecretaryBoard Member
Bobbie Remias is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a master’s degree in professional accountancy from Walsh College and a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and a past member of the Michigan Community College Business Officials Association (MCCBOA), she serves as treasurer for WAGR Warriors, a not-for-profit foundation dedicated to raising awareness for WAGR syndrome, a rare genetic disorder.
Ms. Remias worked for five years as an auditor at Plante Moran, 10 years as the Business Officer of DeLaSalle Collegiate High School, 15 years in Finance at Macomb Community College and after almost 6 years as Vice-Chancellor for Administrative Services at Oakland Community College (where she led a team of over 200 employees), she has recently retired. During retirement, Bobbie looks forward to reading, traveling and spending time with her husband, Steve, their three adult children (and spouses), along with their four grandchildren. She is a 43-year resident of Shelby Township, Michigan and an example of the "Make Macomb Your Home" slogan.
