It’s that time of the year for strawberry picking, but if you’re like me and you’ve never participated in the u-pick strawberry season, then you’re probably wondering what it is all about.
I began my strawberry picking journey at Verellen Orchards and Cider Mill. It’s open from 9-5, Tuesday through Sunday, but they still prefer that you call ahead before arriving. The entrance fee for adults is $3 and each pound of strawberries is $2.25. When you finish picking, your entrance fee will come off your bill. It’s best to arrive in the morning when the strawberries are crisp and ripe for the taking, but even if you arrive around 2pm like I did, you’ll still find lots of fresh ones to add to your bounty.
While you are picking strawberries, there is a big chance that you will get the juices on you, so I suggest wearing clothes that you wouldn’t mind getting dirty. The probability of stepping on a strawberry is high as well, so it would be better to wear darker shoes and shorts if you plan on getting on the ground. Something else important to note is that while picking strawberries, you will be out in the sun with no shade. To combat this, sunscreen is highly recommended.
After your u-pick experience, a good way to close out the day is by heading to the Verellen store for some of their cider, ice cream, and baked goods. There are a variety of different pies in their year-round collection, ranging from apple to French silk. If you are looking for pumpkin and cranapple pies, those are seasonal and order only. Verellen's also has a large assortment of doughnuts, muffins, and zucchini bread. Be sure to check out their daily specials, as well!
Another option for your u-pick strawberry adventure is Westview Orchards and Winery, open every day from 9-5 if weather permits. For u-picking, you must call beforehand for availability.
On your way out, you can also visit Westview's farm market and bakery for their jams, syrups, pies, and award-winning donuts. Also available is Westview’s Kidz Korner, with open seating and a large play area for your children to enjoy. Access to the playground and the animals is included in the $5.75 admissions fee.
