Borg Warner battery service center in Warren receives property tax abatement

Don Gardner

BorgWarner, an automotive and e-mobility supplier headquartered in Auburn Hills, has been awarded a 12-year Industrial Facilities Tax Exemption Certificate by the city of Warren following the company’s expansion into the city in May 2023.

BorgWarner is using the facility as an EV battery service center.

Macomb County Department of Planning and Economic Development (MCPED) worked with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) to obtain a letter of support from the city and proposals from Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works! And Macomb Community College on hiring and training incentives. MCPED also consulted with Borg Warner in providing support to the project.

In 2023, BorgWarner moved into the new Mound Road Industrial Park in Warren between Nine and 10 Mile roads. The facility reflects a $10.9-million investment ($8.6 building cost from Northpoint and $2.3 buildout cost from Borg Warner).

The battery service center will provide service for all BorgWarner batteries in North America, with a focus on testing, diagnostics and training.

BorgWarner is expected to hire an additional 50 employees by May 2025.

In April 2023, BorgWarner announced a plan to invest $20 million in expanding the capabilities of three existing Michigan based facilities in Auburn Hills, Dearborn and Hazel Park, and development of the battery service center, which ended up in Warren.

In support of their Michigan expansion, BorgWarner received a $1.86-million grant from the MEDC through its Michigan Business Development Program that was put toward the expansion activities and further advancement of the company’s electrification goals.
