Macomb County names new chief medical examiner

Press Release

The Macomb County Health Department today announced the appointment of Dr. Mary E. Pietrangelo as the new chief medical examiner after longtime Macomb County Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Daniel Spitz ended his pathology services contract with the County last October. Dr. Pietrangelo brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her new role, and her extensive background in forensic pathology and medicine will contribute significantly to the office's mission.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Mary E. Pietrangelo in her new role as the chief medical examiner,” stated Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel. “Her experience and dedication to forensic pathology in and around Macomb County make her an invaluable asset to our team, and we look forward to the positive impact she will have in bringing her leadership to the Macomb County Medical Examiner's Office."

Dr. Pietrangelo has served as deputy medical examiner in both St. Clair County and Macomb County since 2012, demonstrating her commitment to the field of forensic pathology. Her professional journey also includes a tenure as a family physician in private practice and various roles in medical organizations and committees.

As a graduate of Wayne State University School of Medicine, Dr. Pietrangelo earned her M.D. and further specialized in forensic pathology during her fellowship at the Office of the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Pietrangelo holds multiple certifications, including Diplomate of the American Board of Pathology in Forensic, Anatomic, and Clinical Pathology.

"The Health Department is confident that Dr. Pietrangelo's leadership will further enhance the forensic services provided to our community,” said Andrew Cox, Macomb County Health and Community Services director. “We believe her expertise will contribute to the overall well-being and safety of Macomb County residents."

As a dedicated professional, Dr. Pietrangelo is actively involved in several medical organizations, including the National Association of Medical Examiners, Michigan Association of Medical Examiners, American Academy of Forensic Sciences, College of American Pathologists and the American Society for Clinical Pathology. Her commitment is further highlighted by her participation in various committees and activities within these organizations.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to practice forensic pathology at the Macomb County Medical Examiner’s Office,” said Dr. Pietrangelo. “I’ve learned much over the past years as a deputy medical examiner and I’m excited to be involved with the future of the office.”

The appointment of Dr. Mary Pietrangelo as Chief Medical Examiner marks a new chapter for the Macomb County Medical Examiner's Office. The office is confident that her leadership, coupled with her experience and dedication, will enhance the quality of forensic services provided to the community.
