Working cat program

Employ a working cat for eco-friendly pest control.

Our Working Cat Program is designed to create a mutually beneficial partnership for wayward cats and humans needing rodent control.

Although most working cats are not very socialized to human interactions, they are ideal residents for all kinds of locations such as barns, stables, warehouses, shops, arenas, breweries, garden centers, chicken runs, etc. These working cat candidates have either proven that they will not use a litterbox appropriately, react poorly with too much handling, or simply prefer more space from humans than a home can provide. While they may not make ideal house cats, they can make for great mousers!

Working cats are sterilized, vaccinated, ear tipped and have been provided with essential medical care and prevention prior to their release. Caretakers will assume the responsibility of all future veterinary needs and must agree to provide consistent access to warm, safe shelter and fresh food and water.

We are unable to accept new working cats from the community at this time. The cats in our Working Cats program have been removed from unsafe and unhealthy environments where there is an imminent threat of harm from people, or the cats are at risk of death from starvation. Applications to employ your own Working Cat can be completed below.

Thank you for helping us save more lives by giving these cats a chance to thrive on your property.

Working Cat Employment Guidelines

Cats need time to adjust to new surroundings. It takes about 2-3 weeks for cats to adapt to new sights, sounds and smells of their new environment. They acclimate better if introduced to smaller, enclosed spaces before being allowed to roam, and this will also ensure that they become comfortable enough to stay around. Their personalities range from semi-social to skittish, you may see some especially at meal times, and others will hide until the coast is clear. Fresh food and water should be provided, and the addition of canned food is always an added bonus especially when getting your new working cat acclimated. During this decompression period it is a good idea to supply a litter box with clay litter.

Everyone knows cats can nap like nobody's business. But as it turns out, they're also some of the hardest workers around. Benefits of Working Cats include:

  • Adoption fees are waived (donations are welcome).
  • Working cats provide natural pest control.
  • Cats are vaccinated, spayed/neutered and ear tipped.
  • They are ideal for barns, warehouses, shops, etc.
  • The Working Cat program helps reduce the number of cats euthanized in shelters.
  • The program provides previously homeless cats or those living in dangerous environments, with safe places to live and thrive.
  • Even if your working cat isn't the ideal hunter, no worries! Rodents are biologically programmed to stay away from areas where predators are present. The smell of a working cat will immediately deter rats and mice!
