Volunteer

Make a difference in the life of a shelter pet!

Volunteers are an integral part of our organization and help improve the quality of life for the animals in our care, and play a crucial role in the rest of the life of these shelter pets. We have so many opportunities available, apply to become a volunteer HERE!

Persons interested in volunteering for the Macomb County Animal Control should complete a volunteer application found HERE.

Those applying to volunteer will be subject to a background check. Once an approved background check has been received, the applicant will be contacted and required to attend a volunteer orientation session. This will enable the volunteer to become familiar with the policies and procedures associated with the care and maintenance of the animals and facility and ensure your safety around the animals. All volunteers will be required to read and sign the appropriate waivers of liability and release forms.

A volunteer must be at least eighteen (18) years of age, or sixteen (16) years of age with a signed waiver from a parent/guardian.

Once a volunteer completes orientation, they are welcome to come in during our regular business hours. When volunteers have reached a level of comfort with our environment, they are welcomed on weekends and holidays.

We need volunteers for just about everything we do, but our current biggest needs are:

  • Adoption Counselors
  • Dog Walkers
  • Enrichment Program
  • Feline Friends
  • Greeters
  • Helpful Hands
  • Photographers

We accept court-ordered community service on an individual basis. Persons seeking hours for court-ordered community service must disclose the nature of the offense and provide a copy of their court order prior to being approved. We reserve the right to determine if an individual may complete service hours with our organization.

Volunteer Opportunities

Adoption Counselor

Macomb County Animal Control is seeking Adoption Counselors to assist with off-site adoptions at our partner location, Pet Supplies Plus in Clinton Twp. We are working to expand our adoption opportunities by pursuing off-site events and engaging with pet lovers in a less stressful environment for our shelter animals. This is a volunteer opportunity, however the reward of unconditional love that you are introducing to new families is priceless!

Dog Walkers

Get a new leash on life and make a dog’s day by taking them for a walk! Through this interaction, volunteers provide the dogs with mental stimulation creating a healthier, happier, more adoptable dog. Skip the gym and give back to the community by walking a shelter dog in need!

Enrichment Program

Kennel life is not easy for any animal, especially on days where the weather is less than desirable. Not only do our dogs and cats enjoy daily interactions with staff and volunteers, but they also enjoy in-kennel enrichment to keep their minds busy in the form of toys, treats, and puzzles! Volunteers play a huge role in preparing enrichment for our pets, including stuffing Kongs, making frozen “Pup-sicles”, and catnip toys.

Feline Friends

Join our Feline Friends group and get your kitty fix! Everyone can be Cat Crazy while volunteering at Macomb County Animal Control! Our spacious cat adoption rooms provide ample room for volunteers to get their feline fix!

Greeters

Warm greeting and courtesy can often influence a person's decision to adopt an animal from the shelter. Help the public navigate their way around the shelter, answer questions and provide heartfelt insight about your shelter favorites!

Helpful Hands

Macomb County Animal Control prides itself on providing a clean, sanitary environment and in turn creates a professional and welcoming environment for our community.

Photographers

Quality photos are essential for marketing our pets for adoption, and our volunteers are a huge help in capturing their best angles. If you enjoy making silly noises to get pets to look at the camera, we have an opportunity for you! Help us make all of the shelter pets
PAWS-itively photogenic!
