Pet retention

Pets are family, and families belong together.

Macomb County Animal Control offers many resources to help keep pets and families together. A pet retention grant is a form of financial assistance available for pet owners who are experiencing temporary financial hardship or unforeseen circumstances that may threaten their ability to care for their pet. The following grants are designed to promote responsible pet ownership and prevent pets from being surrendered due to financial constraints.

The Kenneth Thweat Fund can help subsidize veterinary care up to $500. Residents with pets that are experiencing medical issues can complete the application to request assistance. The pet parent would be responsible for the cost of care above and beyond that limitation and the goal is that there is a positive expected outcome to the medical treatment requested.

The Spay and Neuter Grant aims to reduce the number of unwanted or unplanned litters and prevent further overpopulation. This funding is specific to the sterilization services at one of our partner veterinary clinics. Pet parents can request assistance to have their personal pets spayed/neutered as a proactive effort to promote their health, well-being, and the welfare of animals in general.

Grant Eligibility Requirements

  • The application for assistance needs to be completed by the pet owner.
  • Must be a Macomb County Resident in our service areas, which exclude Eastpointe, Mount Clemens, Sterling Heights, and Warren.
  • If requesting assistance for a dog, the dog must be licensed, or a license must be obtained.
  • You must be compliant with the legal pet limit in your community.
  • Pets in need must be for companionship, not breeding.
  • You will agree to not add more pets to your household while you are receiving assistance through the Pet Retention grant.
  • Grant funds are limited and intended to help pets stay with their families. Funds will not be approved for those looking to rehome their pets or for end of life purposes.
  • Completing this application does not guarantee assistance as determination is based on the need.
  • Grant funds are paid directly to the service provider, not the pet parent.
  • Applicants will be responsible for ensuring that their pets arrive at appointments for service as scheduled.
