Are you aware of your benefits? Michigan has a Veterans Trust Fund that is used to assist veterans in need of emergency grants.
To be eligible for Veteran Pension Benefits you must have served on active duty for 90 days and at least one of which must have been during a wartime era and “ under other than dishonorable” discharge. You must also be 65 years old or older or be permanently, totally disabled. These pensions are income and asset based; yet most medical expenses can offset the income/assets. If you are applying for Widow Benefits the veteran must have met the same criteria.
A service connect disability is a chronic medical condition that was directly caused during military service, aggravated by military service, presumptive by military service or secondary to one that was caused by military service. Macomb County Veteran’s Office can assist you in applying for a service connected disability.
