Lake St. Clair

Often called the Heart of the Great Lakes, Lake St. Clair is a beautiful freshwater destination located along Macomb County's eastern shoreline.

Lake St. Clair has 430-square-miles of fresh water, 160 miles of shoreline, an average depth of 10 feet and a maximum depth of only 21 feet. These conditions make it one of the best freshwater fisheries in North America and one of the busiest recreational waterways in the Midwest.

Macomb County sits on the western edge of the lake - with 32 miles of coastline. This provides our community with a number of water-related amenities that everyone can enjoy. Learn more below and visit Tour Lake St. Clair for additional details on events, charters, marinas, lodging and more.

Fishing

For decades, Lake St. Clair has been renowned as a world-class fishing destination thanks to its unique geographic proximity within the Great Lakes basin. The swift flowing St. Clair River brings clean, cold and nutrient-rich water into the lake, where it is channeled in a wide delta consisting of the north, south and middle channels, plus the main shipping channel. These nutrients spawn bait fish which, in turn, spawn bigger fish, including muskellunge, small-mouth bass, yellow perch, walleye, giant channel catfish, pike and large-mouth bass fish. Notably, our fishery is big enough to catch the attention of anglers worldwide, and our community has played host to Bassmaster and Major League Fishing tournaments.
