Wolcott Mill Metropark, a hidden gem in Macomb County

Children pet the sheep along path at Wolcott Mills Metropark.

Recently, some Macomb County Planning and Economic Development (MCPED) team members and their families took time out of their day to experience the wonderful amenities of Wolcott Mill Metropark. With all of our little ones in tow, we set out for the Farm Center home to the sheep, chickens, geese, goats, horses, and dairy cows.

An early morning on the farm came with some sleepy kiddos, and although they started off a little unsure about the whole thing, they quickly warmed up and were ready to see all that was in-store.

Our first stop was the dairy cows and of course we couldn’t see them without saying a few “moos” back and forth. After a long goodbye with the cattle, the goats couldn’t have been happier to see us. They were awake and active, all running around the pen. They quickly became the kids' new best friends as their little giggles filled up the barn.

While heading to the next pen, we were greeted by a sheep being walked around for tours. We got to feel her soft wool and learn how it is used as a material in the world.

The horse barn was next on our agenda and boy were we shocked. Did you know that horses could sleep standing up? I sure didn’t! It was a crazy sight to see!

We left the horses to get their beauty sleep and followed the path to the geese, chickens, and ducks. The now energy-filled kids ran right to the fence and started up some conversations. A few “honks, clucks, and quacks” later and they were well acquainted with each other.

By this time, the kids got a little distracted by the playground and were ready to slide and climb. So while they were playing, a few of us had the chance to witness a milking demonstration. When thinking of milking a cow you may think it all happens by hand, but with advanced technology there is now a milking unit called “the claw” that makes the whole process much easier.

Now that the kids (and a few MCPED employees) were all worn out from the playground, it was time to say goodbye to all of the animals and head home.

Wolcott Mill Metropark Farm Center is a hidden gem of Ray Township. With year-round events and activities for the whole family, the farm center is the perfect place to create memories that will be cherished forever.
