Strawberry season came quickly this year! If you’ve never participated in the u-pick season, then here’s a quick look at what it’s like …
Verellen Orchards and Cider Mill is one of many great farms in Macomb County. They’re open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., as well as Saturdays and Sundays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.. It’s preferred that you call ahead before arriving! It’s best to arrive in the morning when the strawberries are crisp and ripe for the taking, but even if you arrive around 2pm there will still be plenty of fresh ones to add to your bounty. Other great orchards and farms can be found on our website.
While picking strawberries, there is a big chance that you may get some juice on you, so it’s best to wear clothes that you wouldn’t mind getting dirty. The probability of stepping on a strawberry is high as well, so it’s suggested that you wear darker shoes and shorts if you plan on getting on the ground. Something else important to note is that whilst picking strawberries, you will be out in the sun with no shade. To combat this, sunscreen is highly recommended.

After your u-pick experience, a good way to close out the day is by heading to the Verellen store for some of their cider, ice cream, and baked goods. There is a variety of different pies in their year-round collection, ranging from apple to french silk. Verellens also has a large assortment of doughnuts, muffins, and zucchini bread. Be sure to check out their daily specials, as well!
