Karen's commitment to fostering self-confidence in young girls stems from a deeply personal place—watching her own daughters struggle with self-doubt as they entered middle school. Recognizing that confidence declines sharply after age nine, as supported by the ROX Institute study, Karen took action by developing the be-YOU-tiful Workshop Series. This program is specifically designed for 5th-grade girls at the critical juncture where confidence begins to wane, equipping them with tools to reverse this trend.

The four-part workshop series provides a comprehensive approach to confidence-building, addressing topics such as media literacy, emotional resilience, and relationship management. The curriculum is structured to cater to diverse learning styles, incorporating hands-on activities, journaling, storytelling, and meditation. Each session highlights a woman in STEM, reinforcing the idea that young girls can aspire to any career path.

A signature feature of the workshop is the “Magic Mirror Activity,” where girls verbally affirm their strengths while receiving collective reinforcement from their peers. This powerful exercise helps break down self-doubt and instills lasting confidence. Additionally, the workshops challenge participants with real-world exercises to practice the skills they’ve learned, ensuring practical application beyond the classroom.

The impact of the program is evident. Educators report visible transformations in students' confidence and communication skills. Participants from past workshops frequently recall key lessons even a decade later, demonstrating the lasting influence of the curriculum. Additionally, the condensed one-hour in-school program, ""You’re More Than You Think You Are,"" has gained popularity for its accessibility and immediate classroom benefits.

Karen’s initiative is making a measurable difference, helping young girls reclaim their third-grade confidence and build a foundation of self-worth that extends well into adulthood.

A ReJoyceful Animal Rescue is a no-kill, foster-based cat and dog rescue. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) charity located in the Metro-Detroit area. All of the animals that come into in our care have been rescued from one place or another. We pull from high-kill animal shelters, we take in the sick, unwanted, aggressive, abandoned, abused and neglected animals. We place them in a foster home with someone who will understand them, rehabilitate them and show them what it is like to be loved again. We feel that all animals deserve better and we strive to give them a life full of love and happiness.

Our rescue does not cage animals that come into our care. Each animal that comes into our organization is a part of someone’s family until they find their forever homes. This helps us to determine their personalities and work with them to give them the one-on-one attention that they deserve. We also run a community outreach project, helping 24/7 chained dogs, stray/feral cats and more. We provide medical care (including TNR), food, treats, toys, bones, proper tie outs, collars, shelter, straw and more! In 2024, 1,259 animals entered our shelter with 933 successful adoptions. We are on pace to exceed that this year!

All-Ways Care provides in-home care services tailored to the unique needs of individuals with disabilities. These services range from personal care assistance to daily living support, ensuring that clients can remain in their homes while receiving the care they need. With a dedicated team of caregivers and professionals, All-Ways Care delivers high-quality, person-centered services that enhance the quality of life for approximately 300 individuals a year.
In addition to in home care, All-Ways Care, Inc. is dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals with disabilities by providing essential services that promote independence, inclusion, and overall well-being. Recognizing the critical need for both employment opportunities and personalized support, the organization took action by developing a robust vocational program and comprehensive in-home care services. The vocational program serves approximately 700 individuals annually, equipping them with job skills, hands-on training, and employment opportunities through partnerships with local businesses. As a result, many participants achieve long-term job placements, fostering self-sufficiency and confidence. Through its dual approach of employment support and in-home care, the organization has made a measurable impact in the community, empowering individuals with disabilities to lead fulfilling, independent lives.
All-Ways Care, Inc. continues to create meaningful opportunities and provide essential support, ensuring that individuals with disabilities can thrive in both their personal and professional lives.

Amour Women Foundation (AWF) is a catalyst for change in the lives of young women, providing them with the skills, confidence, and mentorship needed to become successful entrepreneurs. Recognizing the barriers many young women face in business—such as lack of resources, mentorship, and financial education—AWF was founded to bridge the gap and create a pathway for economic empowerment.

AWF took action by launching its Youth Entrepreneurship Mentorship Program, which offers hands-on workshops, financial literacy training, and direct mentorship with established female business leaders. Through structured programming, participants learn how to develop business plans, access funding opportunities, and cultivate the leadership skills necessary to navigate the entrepreneurial world.

The impact is evident: numerous young women have participated, with many successfully launching businesses or pursuing higher education in business-related fields. AWF has also partnered with a plethora local businesses and organizations, ensuring program sustainability and community support. Through initiatives like the Mi Amour campaign, AWF engages local restaurants and businesses to raise funds and awareness, further amplifying its mission.

By empowering young women to turn their ideas into viable businesses, AWF is fostering economic growth and self-sufficiency within southeast Michigan communities. The foundation’s work is not just about creating entrepreneurs—it’s about shaping confident, capable leaders who will inspire the next generation.

The Autism Society of Greater Detroit (ASGD) is deserving of the Macomb County Nonprofit of the Year Award due to its unwavering commitment to enhancing the lives of individuals and families impacted by autism in the region. Founded in 2022, ASGD consistently provides critical support and advocacy for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Its programs are designed to foster inclusion, education, and empowerment, and its impactful efforts have created lasting positive change in Macomb County.

ASGD has taken substantial action by offering a variety of resources, including educational workshops, social skills training, family support services, and advocacy initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for individuals with autism. The organization’s annual events, such as its educational conferences and family resource fairs, have attracted hundreds of participants each year, while also partnering with local schools, healthcare providers, and businesses to promote autism awareness and inclusion.

One notable accomplishment is the expansion of its community engagement by providing autism tool kits and decompression spaces for community events. This increases the opportunity for socialization and increased impact for community events. Additionally, ASGD’s advocacy work has led to significant policy changes, improving access to services and resources for individuals with autism. By fostering a stronger community network and collaborating with key stakeholders, ASGD has created an environment where individuals with ASD are empowered to live independently and thrive.

The measurable results speak for themselves: ASGD has helped improve educational outcomes, increased local awareness, and provided critical resources that directly impact hundreds of families in Macomb County. For its dedication, impactful programming, and consistent growth in advocating for individuals with autism, ASGD is the ideal candidate for Macomb County Nonprofit of the Year.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, CCF is a beacon for anyone in need.

An abundance of achievements and milestones are worth recognizing - our June 2020 successful expansion of our behavioral health and human (social) services center in Sterling Heights, to our Attainable Housing project, CCF continues to meet community needs.

Located in an Opportunity Zone, the new construction eliminated blighted commercial property and replaced it with a 135 Affordable Apartments, 4,000 square feet of educational space for 3–5-year-olds, and 5,000 square feet of commercial space on the first floor along North Van Dyke Road.

It’s often surprising to many that the Chaldean Community Foundation extends its services far beyond our Iraqi immigrant roots. Over the past year alone, we have extended a helping hand to 48,000 individuals hailing from 70 different countries of origin.

CCF’s initiatives are gaining national attention. The recognition of our C.H.A.I. Program by the ARCH National Respite Network as an “Innovative and Exemplary Respite Service” is a significant accolade that reflects the dedication and excellence of our team.

Our commitment to serving continues with ongoing job fairs with various partners and mobile health screenings in association with Ascension of Michigan. These efforts are designed to support and enhance the well-being of our community members in practical and meaningful ways.

As we look towards the future, our greatest asset is our vibrant and dynamic young people. Their energy, creativity, and drive are shaping the future, and it is our responsibility to nurture and support their growth. Programs like Little Scholars are essential in this regard, providing young individuals with the skills and opportunities they need to thrive. It is crucial that we continue to foster leadership and development in the next generation, ensuring that they are well-prepared to lead and innovate.

Little Baseball Inc. began offering the Little League Challenger Baseball program in 1989.  In 1993 Clinton Valley Little League Challenger Baseball started to meet an unfilled need in Macomb County.  The Clinton Valley Little League Challenger Baseball program began with 16 players.  Every year since 1993 the Challenger Baseball program has been promoting the program by getting information to special needs schools, clinics, physical therapy businesses and mental health agencies.  Since 1993 the program has grown to about 200 players.  Games are played June through August.  Players play approximately 12 to 14 games. A Fall Ball season has been recently added where they can play an additional 6 to 8 games. They also have the opportunity to attend special needs baseball camps and Challenger Jamborees.  Our coaches work with players on fundamental baseball skills as well as providing confidence and fun.  We have many players who have been with our Challenger Baseball program for over 20 years.  We have seen the benefit in players in the proven therapeutic and socialization skills over the years.  It also strengthens the player's self-esteem. Our players wear the same uniforms and use the same equipment as other Little League players. Our retention rate of returning players is at least 90% every year.  Players come to play on their own adaptive fields that were built in 2008 and 2024.  They provide a safe and structured environment.  We are very proud of the joy and the smiles it gives special needs children and adults and that same joy that shines through on the faces of their families.

Comprehensive Youth Services, Inc. (CYS) exemplifies the mission of a nonprofit committed to transforming lives in Macomb County. Recognizing the increasing challenges of youth homelessness, mental health struggles, and substance use disorders, CYS has expanded its services to meet these urgent needs through three core programs: Family Youth Interventions, Clinton Counseling Center, and the Clinton Counseling Center Jail Program.

Family Youth Interventions provides emergency shelter, transitional living, and rapid rehousing to youth facing homelessness. They offer secure stable housing, and the tools and support necessary for independent living.

Clinton Counseling Center is a state-certified outpatient facility that delivers vital mental health and substance use outpatient therapy. Serving hundreds annually, the center provides therapy, case management, and specialized recovery programs. Through its evidence-based services, individuals struggling with addiction and mental health challenges receive the support they need to regain stability and wellness.

The Clinton Counseling Center Jail Program extends these services to incarcerated individuals, focusing on prevention, rehabilitation, and reintegration. By offering substance use counseling and mental health treatment within the Macomb County Jail, this program has played a key role in reducing recidivism and helping individuals successfully transition back into the community.

Beyond direct services, CYS engages in advocacy, community partnerships, and outreach to expand its impact. Its unwavering commitment to providing safety, stability, and hope makes it a deserving recipient of the Macomb Business Award for Nonprofit of the Year.

Amy Haba came to GSC in 2011 under an internship. She returned in 2013 to handle GSC casework. In the years since she moved through GSC learning how this local nonprofit operates. She thinks on her feet, outside the box, pivots, and leads with her whole heart. She led GSC through COVID from office to home, instituted a cloud database for all who partnered, helped a community during the extreme fire in Mt Clemens on Valentine's Eve 2021, and followed each unit for the following year. She earned the position of Executive Director because she knows that each case is its own story. Whether it is a mom with a sick child, a family experiencing devastating setbacks, or a dual-income household trying to make ends meet. She has led the staff, churches, and volunteers to always follow their hearts, really listen, and never leave anyone without hope.

Good Shepherd Coalition has been a part of Macomb County since 1994 when nine original churches knew we could do more in collaboration for families and individuals. What GSC has grown into is 78 churches, numerous agencies, organizations, schools, and people who believe that a small group of individuals can change the world. For each of us Macomb County IS our world.

Never leave someone without hope, this is the motto we have always followed.

The CDC reports that individuals with physical, intellectual, or learning disabilities are at the greatest risk for obesity and the numerous health problems that go along with it, including diabetes, heart disease, etc. Unfortunately, this problem isn’t easily solved because when it comes to a fitness regimen, most special needs families don’t know where to start. Further, well-known gyms like Lifetime aren’t viable options. They are loud, overwhelming, and intimidating. So, these parents don’t have places to take their sedentary children: an underserved and overlooked population when it comes to fitness, exercise and healthy lifestyles.

While I was both teaching and working out with my students after school, I quickly realized that I was tackling an epidemic, and I was doing it alone. The number of families seeking my services grew daily (the word of mouth in the special needs community is very strong and good news travels fast). The need was evident, and the demand was staggering. So, in 2016 I left teaching and opened Inclusively Fit: a gym that specializes in serving the special needs community. In the last seven years, my team and I have served over 250 clients with challenges of cognitive & physical impairment, autism, cerebral palsy, blindness, and Down syndrome.
I know Inclusively Fit is a great success from simply the stories and testimonies of the people that know best: the parents. Getting active and losing weight are just part of the story. Parents also reported many other positive changes in their children, from seeing improvements in their listening skills and sleep habits, to their children being more outgoing, willing to try new things and being more social. While these are phenomenal in themselves, the one thing that really sticks with me was they also all told me that their children were simply: happier.

Our founder, Kristy Schena, is a speech language pathologist and was working at BiCounty Hospital when she discovered the lack of insurance benefits for children with special needs and the private pay rate was $45 for 15 minutes of therapy. This was out of reach for many families faced with other medical costs when faced with the challenges of having a child with special needs. Kristy created a multidisciplinary program that would prevent the "summer slide" for these children and help them maintain their skills over the summer months. Working with the Macomb Intermediate School District, 13 children were referred for the first summer in 1999 and all received free physical, occupational, and speech therapy with the support of local businesses and donors. Kristy continued to recognize the needs in the special needs community and KOTG kept going and growing. Programs and the age range expanded throughout the years (3-17 years). Recognizing that children with special needs are at greater risk for obesity and diabetes and often do not have access to mainstream sports/fitness, Kristy introduced sports, fitness and wellness programs. These programs include flag football and cheer, baseball, basketball, golf, boxing, tennis. STEM and the Arts programs include Robotics, Adaptive Dance and Theatre, Music Therapy and Bucket Drumming. Mental health and well being is also addressed through social skills groups, Empowered Too!, and parent/caregiver classes and workshops. She recognized that teens ages 13-17 often did not have social outlets or job training opportunities and she expanded programs to meet those needs. KOTG  graduates are doing amazing things because they were given a chance - MSU Law School grad, nursing grad, marching band at Central Michigan, National Archery team member, Country Club junior champion, students attending college programs and college certificate programs, and even some who now come back to volunteer.

The Kiwanis Club of Shelby Golden k fits the selected category because 100% 0f its fundraising efforts and monetary donations are used to purchase more equipment and supplies.  The nominee took action because is more often than not our senior populations needs are greater than can be imagined. Many seniors are to proud to ask for help and go without having their needs met. Macomb County is a unique place, where the community is served from the County level programs to the grassroots  level programs . We all work as a team  to insure needs are met along life's journey. Over the last 8 years the medical Loan Closet has  provided over 12,000  Seniors, veterans and other members of the community with medical equipment and supplies.  The 23 volunteers donate all their time with no paid positions for running the Medical Closet.  Items dispersed are tracked  upon disbursement  and and upon return. The community is so appreciative of the service.   So many seniors can not afford to purchase medical equipment and insurances may have limitations of providing.  Over the last 8 years the need has increased  and expected to double in the next year ( from the previous year).    It would be a great honor to have The Kiwanis Club of Shelby Golden k recognized with the distinguished honor of Macomb business award of the year.

The Macomb Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated plays a vital role in the well-being, vitality, and growth of Macomb County by actively contributing to the community's success. Since its chartering, the chapter has demonstrated a strong commitment to its mission through service, sisterhood, scholarship, and social action. Hardworking and dedicated, the women of the Macomb Alumnae Chapter have worked tirelessly, providing countless hours of service that directly impact those in need within the community.

One of the chapter’s most notable contributions is the awarding of over $10,000 annually in student scholarships, empowering local students to pursue their academic dreams. The chapter's initiatives extend far beyond scholarships, though, as it has consistently engaged in community-based programs aimed at improving the lives of residents. Through collaborations with local partners, the chapter has organized numerous impactful events, such as the annual Back to School Wellness Fair, where they distribute over 350 filled bookbags each year to students. The event also offers valuable services like free haircuts, manicures, mobile dentistry, health exams, and access to essential health and human services, making a direct and tangible difference for hundreds of families.

The Macomb Alumnae Chapter is committed to carrying out the legacy of the sorority’s Founders by addressing the needs of the community through initiatives under the Five-Point Programmatic Thrust. These areas—Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement/Social Action—serve as the foundation for the chapter’s ongoing programs. Through its sustained efforts, the chapter remains a cornerstone in the development of Macomb County, embodying the true spirit of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated while empowering and uplifting the community for years to come.

In 2024, The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services selected MyCare Health Center, to participate in a pilot for health centers to implement innovative approaches to support transitions in care for people leaving incarceration. MyCare was only 1 of 2 health centers in Michigan, and only 1of 54 across the country to receive this highly competitive award.

Through this program, Connections 2 Care, MyCare will soon begin providing health services including medical, dental, behavioral health, and other vital   services to individuals expected to be released from incarceration within 90 days. MyCare can then work with justice involved individuals up to one year after release to help ensure continuity of care as they transition home to the community. This program will work with proven care models already in place while individuals are incarcerated in the Macomb Correctional Facility and the Macomb County Jail in an effort to reduce recidivism and improve health related outcomes.

In collaboration with multiple organizations across Macomb County, including MCCMH, the Macomb County Jail, Macomb Community Corrections, and the Macomb Correctional Facility, MyCare anticipates providing transitional health services to hundreds of individuals with an overall goal to enhance public health and safety with successful re-entry of individuals returning to the community. These include the shared goals of:

• Reducing drug overdose risk,
•Addressing mental health and substance use disorder treatment needs,
• Managing chronic conditions and preventive screening for infectious
disease, and
•Case management services that address social determinants of health

As a nonprofit provider of community health to the residents of Macomb County for over 15 years, MyCare is proud to be able to expand its service array to an even greater population for our area and ensure that it meets its mission to provide quality, affordable, and accessible healthcare for ALL individuals.

The New Baltimore Farmers Market is a 501(c)(3) non-profit community organization.
Since its origin the NBFM every Sunday has not only provided its community access to fresh produce from local farms, fresh honey, eggs, baked goods, homemade sauces and spices, jerky and meat from livestock but has dog treats too.

NBFM heard the pleas of its community and worked hard to be able to accept BRIDGE CARD, SNAP Benefits & P-EBT at the Market for paying, and not only do they accept them, they offer Double Up Bucks which means you can Get MATCHED up to $10 in FREE funds to use for fruits & vegetables as well as food bearing plants & herb plants EVERY WEEK!  That is great service to offer  our community during trying times.

The NBFM would not be the success it is if it wasn’t for all the hard work going on behind the scenes,  the market manager is the one who makes everything run smoothly, truthfully without her, Brenda Keith, the market would not be as successful as it is or as community focused. Showing up at every market, not only is she organizing placement of all the 150 plus vendors, talking with all vendors and shoppers but she is incorporating community events to coincide within the market days like having a kid’s day, grandparent’s day, corn roast or even the Boo Bash at the last market which brings the community out to the market to have fun while they shop.

The NBFM hosts weekly musicians that offer live entertainment for the Perusing consumers and even local charities are present for the community to learn about.
Not only does the NBFM help local small businesses, but helps the regular downtown businesses open on Sundays find new clientele, together they are helping the community as a whole, prosper.

DRIVE R & E Family Foundation DRIVE is a 100% volunteer operated, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our team is passionate about improving the lives of underprivileged children throughout Southeast Michigan.

Being strictly volunteer operated means that every dollar given via donation, fundraiser, grant, etc. goes directly towards improving the lives of local children in need.

Right now, DRIVE works directly with 4 local elementary schools within the Romeo and Utica school districts. We work with these schools on the following programs:

- Back 2 School: Drive provides backpacks and school supplies at the start of the school year to get the kids off to a great start!

- Elementary Eats!: Each week during the school year DRIVE provides children with 6 meals (2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners) to take home with them on the weekend so they have food to eat at home.

- Christmas Cheer: Drive provides winter clothing and gear as well as some wish list items to the kids for Christmas, as well as their siblings.

Currently, we have about 400 children in our program amongst the schools. We feed these kids every week throughout the school year. The kids in our program are getting these supports all through the year so we are making sure they have what they need to thrive!

Our ultimate goal is to support these children by providing them with the everyday essentials that many take for granted such as food, clothing, school supplies, and more! We really love that we are helping kids that live right here in our community, and having the collaboration with the schools and their staff has been amazing!

We will continue to work hard at growing our foundation as we hope to grow our reach to 500 kids. Together we can make a difference!

Szajna-Carr For the Paws was created to assist law enforcement K9 Units by being an additional resource to help cover the cost of equipment, training or other vital needs.  Prior to starting the foundation, my husband and I, traveled and donated and sponsored other K9 units in Georgia, Florida & other States and saw how successful they were.  We were inspired to start Szajna-Carr For The Paws to assist the K9 Officers in Michigan.  We have assisted with several ballistic vests, tracking harnesses, bite sleeves, goggles, training sent kits and many kennel supplies, such as tugs, water bowls, balls and leashes.  We are even purchasing a K9 for Shelby Township Police Department and working on raising funds for purchasing K9's for the Macomb County Sheriff's Department.  K9 Units work together across the county and city lines on a regular basis and train together, so assisting one department, in turn assist many.  Not only are these K9 Officers working their shifts, they also have their K9 partner home with them so they are basically on call 24/7.    We also are out in the community promoting the importance of the K9 Units, they not only protect but they are out their finding the lost children or elderly and they are just amazing partners.

The last two years have seen tremendous growth in Urban Seed's organization and impact! Towards the end of 2023, the garden received official 501(c)3 status from the state and federal government. In 2024, Urban Seed took their original handshake agreement to use the city-owned parcel at 16425 9 Mile, and worked with Eastpointe's city administration and council to forge a 25 year lease. The lease even included the replacement of the garden's aging parking lot! The nine member board continues to work diligently to find new ways to expand their produce yield, programming, and impact. Since formal tracking began in 2022, the garden has given over 3,460 pounds of food back to the community! The amount has increases every year, and the team is optimistic that they will be able to grow over 2,000 pounds in 2025. The money raised through rental beds and sponsor beds goes right back into purchasing seeds and supplies to help the garden function and evolve over time. Many individuals, on top of donating their time and money, also donate supplies and seeds to further increase the garden's impact. In addition to being a gardening endeavor, Urban Seed builds community in so many other ways and with different organizations, including the Eastpointe FreeStore and the Eastpointe Memorial Library. Events have included harvest festivals, Pride celebrations, Halloween events, kid-focused programming like rock painting, and bird watching! Urban Seed also regularly communicates and collaborates with other community gardens, including the one in neighboring St. Clair Shores. They are also working with some of their current volunteers to establish more community gardens in South Warren. Eastpointe's Community Garden stands as a critical third space and pillar in our Family Town. From every angle, Urban Seed is building collaboration and community in the Gateway to Macomb County!
