When Gestamp, a Spanish automotive supplier, reached out to Macomb County Planning and Economic Development (MCPED) in 2023, we knew we had a project on our hands that would test the old adage, “time is of the essence.”
Understanding the tight timeline, our team was not only able to locate a site to build its 450,000 square foot plant in Chesterfield Township, the team was also able to overcome several obstacles that could have delayed the project. By coordinating with Macomb County Department of Roads and utility partner, DTE, MCPED helped ensure Gestamp received the permits for temporary overhead and permanent underground power to the site.
As a top 25 tier 1 firm, Gestamp develops innovatively designed products to achieve safer, lighter, and cleaner vehicles. The Macomb County facility will be ready to meet new EV demands from the car manufacturers in Michigan. Once complete, the project will create 390 new jobs.
Because of the competitiveness of this and other Gestamp projects, the company was eligible to receive a $5 million business development grant from the state. Most of that grant will go to the Chesterfield Township project. The investment and creating new jobs also helped secure a 12-year local tax abatement. Gestamp is working with Macomb Community College and Michigan Works! to hire and train employees, just in time for its 2025 launch.
