Mettle Ops Builds the Future of Defense in Macomb County

What started as a veteran-owned startup has grown into one of Michigan’s leading defense technology companies. Headquartered in Sterling Heights, Mettle Ops has built a reputation for developing innovative engineering, manufacturing and modernization solutions that support the U.S. military—demonstrating that world-class defense innovation can thrive right here in Macomb County.

Founded by Army veteran Katie Bigelow, Mettle Ops operates under the mission of “Warfighters Serving Warfighters.” Drawing on the experience of its veteran-led workforce, the company develops technologies designed to improve the safety, capability and effectiveness of America’s warfighters. That mission has helped drive the company’s continued growth and national recognition. In 2026, Bigelow was named Michigan’s Small Business Person of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration, recognizing her leadership and the company’s growth, innovation and impact. Mettle Ops is also a certified Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business and Women-Owned Small Business and participates in the SBA’s 8(a) Business Development Program.

Mettle Ops’ success is another example of Macomb County’s strength as a national center for defense manufacturing, engineering and advanced technology. By creating high-skilled jobs, strengthening the regional defense supply chain and delivering innovative solutions for the Department of Defense, Mettle Ops is contributing to both Macomb County’s economy and the future of national security.
