Macomb county sees sustained decline in tax foreclosures

Macomb County Treasurer Lawrence Rocca announced for a third year in a row a decline in tax foreclosures due to his administration’s focus on helping residents work out payment plans through the Keep Macomb Your Home Program. Treasurer Rocca stated: “Foreclosing on a property for unpaid taxes can have a devastating effect not only on the owner but also the surrounding neighbors in terms of the property values of their homes. While collecting taxes is one of our main responsibilities, it is important we do so in a way that keeps individuals in their homes whenever possible. By working with people, one-on-one, to provide extensions, set up payment plans, help apply for state aid and obtain financial counseling, we are helping to protect the less fortunate and to maintain all property values in our county. For this year, after working out 783 payment plans with a compliance rate of over 98%, 109 parcels were foreclosed on, out of which only four (4) were homeowner occupied.”

In 2018, after working out 775 payment plans, 181 parcels were foreclosed on. In 2017, after working out 673 payment plans, 238 parcels were foreclosed on. In 2016, after the previous administration worked out 615 payment plans, 313 parcels were foreclosed on. For any questions, residents are encouraged to contact the Macomb County Treasurer’s Office as soon as possible at (586) 469-5190 to discuss working out a payment plan to Keep Macomb Your Home.
