Information for Macomb County residences on filing or renewing a Notary Public application

Please note: Make sure to apply to become a Notary through the Clerk's Office web site and not the State's web site

Apply in person (For a new or renewal notary application)

To qualify to become a notary, an individual must be at least 18 years old; a resident of the State of Michigan or if you are a non-Michigan resident maintain a principal place of business in the State; U.S. citizen or proof of legal presence; read and write in English; and be free of any felony/misdemeanor convictions, and other violations as described in the law.

Before applying, applicant MUST obtain a $10,000 surety bond and power of attorney, and bring BOTH the surety bond and the power of attorney to the County Clerk’s office in which your reside.

Applicant MUST complete the online application before making an appointment to come in and complete the process.

Visit the Macomb County Clerk's Office

(Please note: your application will be available for two weeks after submission)

  • Make an appointment to visit the Macomb County Clerk's Office Vital Records Department at 120 N Main in Mount Clemens.

When applying to become a notary, you will need the following:

  • Acquire a surety bond in the sum of $10,000 from a surety agent licensed to do business in this state.  You can search for licensed agencies at www.michigan.gov/difs. A surety must be licensed to do business in this state. 

    Please Note: Notaries are required to obtain a $10,000.00 surety bond and file it at the office of the county clerk in the county where you live in. The cost of a surety bond will vary -- generally between $50.00 to $100.00.

  • Once you have obtained your $10,000 surety bond and power of attorney, sign the two lines where it states "principle" with your notary name in front of a notary public.

  • Make an appointment to visit the Macomb County Clerk's Office Vital Records Department at 120 N Main in Mount Clemens.

Final Steps:

  • The application, with our seal on it, should be mailed to the Great Seal within 90 days, along with the required $10 application fee made payable to the "State of Michigan."

  • The Office of the Great Seal within the Secretary of State shall review the application and may conduct a background check.

  • The Secretary of State approves or denies the application after a review of the application, payment of the proper fee, and results of any background investigation.

  • When the Secretary of State approves an application, the applicant receives their notary commission by email. Please check all spam folders.

  • The appointment would expire on his or her birthday between six and seven years after the date of appointment.

  •  PLEASE NOTE: You cannot notarize documents until you receive your commission from the Great Seal.
