May is a busy month in Macomb County. The first week we started off celebrating National Small Business Week. It was important for us to acknowledge this week because it is estimated that out of the nearly 17,000 businesses in Macomb County, nine out of 10 are small businesses. In the United States, more than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and they are responsible for creating two out of every three new jobs a year. Small businesses have a profound impact on our economy. Whether it is a local ice cream shop or an emerging advanced manufacturing company, these local economic anchors are fueling prosperity across Macomb County.
This week we are celebrating National Safe Boating Week from May 16-May 22. As sheriff, I always recognized this week and I continue to do so. With all of the water-related activities here in Macomb County, it’s important that our residents be as educated as possible about water and boating safety. And, of course, this weekend we will be celebrating Memorial Day. Macomb County has several fun Memorial Day parades for residents and visitors to participate in. Check out our event calendar to see when and where they are.
Looking forward, we have a full lineup of fun set up at Freedom Hill once again this year for the summer. Events include not just concerts, but other family-fun festivals. I’d also like to remind everyone one more time that we are putting together a Macomb County team for the 4th Annual Sprint and Splash. Employees who decide to join our team will receive a free Sprint and Splash T-shirt as well as a discount to participate in the event. To receive the discount, please e-mail Amanda Minaudo at email@example.com.
Have a great start to the summer!

Debbie Safian - Macomb County Michigan State University Extension
By Sarah Cormier, Macomb County Executive Office
Her job title is administrative assistant, but that is just one of the many roles Debbie
Safian performs for Macomb County’s Michigan State University Extension (MSUE) office.
It’s safe to say that, as someone who has worked for the department since 1994, Safian is an expert in pretty much everything MSUE related, which is a task in and of itself, as MSUE provides a wide variety of programs to residents in Macomb County. MSUE’s goal is to serve residents with programming that focuses on agriculture, natural resources, children, youth, families and community and economic development. As an employee for the county who works with MSUE to help facilitate and promote these programs, Safian must be aware of many different aspects of each program.
