Free tax preparation available
Free tax preparation is available to Macomb county residents who cannot afford to pay to have their taxes prepared for them thanks to the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program and amazing community volunteers. This program aims to help families avoid high tax prep fees, access all credits they are eligible for and connect families to services and programs that will help them increase their financial stability.
If you make $84,000 or less, you can file your own State and Federal taxes. Visit MyFreeTaxes.com for more information.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Macomb County Veteran Services Tax Program.
To have a successful program we need you!
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provides low and moderate-income individuals and families $67,000 with free, reliable assistance in filing federal and state tax returns. In CY 2024 our program submitted over 2,400 tax returns.
Available positions include, answering phones and scheduling appointments, greeter, and preparer. The IRS does require an ethics test for every volunteer, an intake test for greeters, and preparers have one additional test. These test are open book and we provide all the training. If you commit to volunteering, we ask that you commit to one 6-7 hour shift per week.
