Mount Clemens, MI – Today, November 15, 2024, the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) was proud to facilitate a donation of $5,000 from the Elizabeth K. Galeana Charitable Foundation (EKG Foundation) to the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge #112.
Larry Smith, FOP #112 President, and his wife started this mission over three decades ago. The Shop with a Cop program specifically assists low-income families during the Christmas season. The number of children reached is contingent on donations received throughout the year. Children ages 5-11 are invited to Shop with a Cop.
MCSO Staff and Reserves volunteer as “chaperones” and companions to the children while they shop for items on their wish lists. MCSO has 8 Reserve Units, and they play a huge part in helping with this event. At least 30 Reserves attended in 2023, shopping with approximately 150 children.
“We feel that in today’s world, it is important for these children to experience a different perspective on what law enforcement officers do in our community,” stated Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham. “The Shop with a Cop program provides the opportunity for a positive experience with law enforcement and develop positive memories, which in return promotes trust in law enforcement. And this incredible donation makes the extraordinary reach of event possible.”
The EKG Charitable Foundation was formed in 2008 to honor Elizabeth K. Galeana and the spirit she brought to the world. The organization’s charitable contributions bring lasting and positive change to young people’s live so that they may become productive members of their communities.
