Specialty Courts

Macomb County has Specialty Treatment Court programs operating in both District Courts and Circuit Court.

Specialty Treatment Courts provide an alternative to traditional prosecution for non-violent offenders whose crimes are linked to substance use disorders, mental health issues, or other rehabilitative needs. These courts aim to reduce recidivism and promote public safety by offering structured treatment programs in lieu of incarceration. Treatment courts have been proven to reduce recidivism, lower crime, save lives, and decrease the costs of incarceration.

Macomb County has Specialty Treatment Court programs operating in both District Courts and Circuit Court, including:

  • Drug Courts
  • Mental Health Courts
  • Sobriety Courts
  • Veterans Courts

Drug Court:
The Drug & Sobriety Specialty Program focuses on rehabilitating individuals struggling with substance use while ensuring public safety. Goals include:

  • Providing early intervention and structured rehabilitation
  • Encouraging long-term recovery through intensive treatment
  • Testing randomly for drug and alcohol use
  • Holding participants accountable with court monitoring and sanctions
  • Supporting family involvement when appropriate

Sobriety Court:
Designed for repeat drunk driving offenders, Sobriety Court provides intensive supervision and treatment to break the cycle of alcohol abuse. Program goals include:

  • Promoting long-term sobriety
  • Protecting public safety by preventing repeat offenses
  • Implementation of rigorous random drug and alcohol testing
  • Enhancing quality of life for participants

Mental Health Court:
This program connects individuals with mental illness to appropriate interventions, programming, and treatment while ensuring accountability for their actions. Objectives include:

  • Reducing future criminal involvement
  • Efficiently utilizing court and community resources
  • Enhancing public safety by addressing underlying mental health needs appropriate

Veteran’s Treatment Court:
Dedicated to serving Macomb County veterans, this court focuses on justice-involved veterans who struggle with substance abuse and mental health issues. The program provides specialized treatment and resources to help veterans reintegrate as law-abiding citizens.

  • Aligning participants to VA programs
  • Drug and alcohol testing
  • Assistance with employment programs

Benefits of Specialty Treatment Courts:
Participants in these programs receive structured treatment and support while avoiding traditional penalties such as incarceration, criminal records, and heavy fines. To qualify, an individual must take accountability by pleading guilty to their charge and actively participate in the program.
