Mount Clemens, MI – Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido announced that Daniellys Villegas-Moreno, 24, of Warren, was arraigned on a safe gun storage charge after a child allegedly shot himself in the hand with an unsecured and unlocked handgun.
It is alleged that on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, a three-year-old child shot himself in the hand with a weapon that was not secured in a safe nor equipped with a gunlock. The child is in stable condition.
On Tuesday, January 27, 2026, Villegas-Moreno, the child’s mother, was arraigned before Judge Michael Chupa in the 37th District Court in Warren, MI. Villegas-Moreno is charged with Firearms – Safe Storage Violation – Premises Under Individual’s Control – Minor Present and Injured Self or Another, a 5-year felony.
This is the maximum charge available under the law based upon the evidence presented to date.
Judge Chupa set Villegas-Moreno’s bond at $10,000 cash/surety. As conditions of bond, she cannot possess, use or be in the presence of firearms, she must wear a GPS tether upon release, and she cannot leave the State of Michigan. Villegas-Moreno is scheduled for a Probable Cause Conference on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, and a Preliminary Exam on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, before Judge Chupa at the 37th District Court in Warren, MI.
“Michigan’s firearm safe storage statute is designed to reduce preventable deaths and injuries, including incidents of youth self-harm and gun-related violence. My office has prioritized public awareness so residents understand their legal responsibilities. If a firearm is in a household where children could gain access, it must be stored in a locked container or fitted with a device that makes it unusable,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.
The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office’s campaign “Safe gun storage saves lives” was promoted throughout the county from September through November 2025. Please visit the Office’s website at www.macombgov.org/departments/prosecutors-office to learn about the Safe Storage law and its requirements.
