Warren man bound over as charged, accused of felonious assault and animal torture

Mount Clemens, MI – Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido announced that 42-year-old James Vigneau, of Warren, MI was bound over as charged on felony counts alleging that he committed an armed assault on two people and stabbed the family’s dog. 

It is alleged that on Sunday, May 17, 2026, Vigneau was asked to leave the Warren, MI home of some friends after he made inappropriate comments. He pulled out a knife and slashed it toward a man and his daughter. The family dog came to protect his owners and Vigneau stabbed the dog two times in the mouth and once in the nose.  The dog suffered nonfatal injuries.

On Thursday, June 4, 2026, Vigneau’s Preliminary Exam was held before Judge Steven M. Bieda in the 37th District Court in Warren, MI. At the conclusion of the Exam, Judge Bieda bound Vigneau over as charged.  Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Justin Pollard conducted the Exam on behalf of the People.

Vigneau is charged with:

• Animals – Killing/Torturing – Second Degree, a 7-year felony
• Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, a 4-year felony
• Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, a 4-year felony
• Habitual Offender – Fourth Offense Notice, an aggravating sentencing factor.

These are the maximum charges available under the law based upon the evidence presented to date.

Vigneau will be arraigned before Judge Joseph Toia in the Macomb County Circuit Court on Monday, June 15, 2026, at 1:30.

"Those who abuse animals should expect to face the full consequences of the law. Animal cruelty is a deliberate act of violence, and my office will not tolerate it. We will vigorously prosecute individuals who harm, neglect, or exploit animals and seek appropriate penalties to protect both animals and the public. Every case will be treated with the seriousness it deserves," stated Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.
