Mount Clemens, MI – A 16-year-old juvenile is being detained after allegedly crashing a vehicle at a high rate of speed into another vehicle while fleeing from police on Saturday, July 12, 2025. The collision resulted in the death of 28-year-old Alex Habib of Madison Heights.
A Preliminary Hearing was scheduled to be held in the Macomb County Juvenile Court on July 14, 2025. Referee Anthony Scotta granted the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office request for a Special Adjournment to allow for a thorough review of the facts and circumstances to decide if the interests of justice and protection of the public require the juvenile to be tried as an adult. Referee Scotta denied the juvenile bond and ordered him to remain in the Juvenile Justice Center pending the next Preliminary Hearing date set for July 18, 2025.
“This was a completely preventable tragedy. An innocent person is dead because someone allegedly chose to flee from law enforcement, endangering everyone around them. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, and we remain committed to seeking justice,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.
Prosecutor Lucido is actively calling on Michigan lawmakers to come together in support of strong, bipartisan legislation to address the growing public safety threat of drivers who refuse to stop for law enforcement.
“This dangerous trend puts lives at risk and undermines the rule of law. By working together across party lines, we can ensure law enforcement has the tools they need to protect our roads and our communities,” stated Prosecutor Lucido.
With a growing number of innocent lives lost to drivers fleeing law enforcement, the urgency is clear. The Michigan House is now taking up a bill that would impose tougher penalties on those who refuse to stop for police.
“Every time a driver chooses to flee, they put lives at risk,” Prosecutor Lucido said. “We need statutory enhancement of consequences including mandatory prison time. The people of the state of Michigan deserve to be protected.”
The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office represents the people of Macomb County. We are committed to achieving justice and following the laws of the State of Michigan. All defendants accused of a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
