Man pleads no contest to multiple charges after fleeing from police with son in car

Press Release

Mount Clemens, MI – Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido announced that 31-year-old Otez Coil pled no contest to three charges to resolve his case connected to a December 16, 2025, incident when he was driving erratically and at excessive speeds on southbound Van Dyke in Warren, MI. He disregarded police officers attempt to stop him. He crashed into the guardrail while turning onto 11 Mile Road. He exited the vehicle and removed his 9-year-old son, who he was holding when officers approached him.

On Tuesday, March 30, 2026, at a Pretrial Conference before Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Kathryn Viviano, Coil pled no contest to:

Police Officer – Fleeing – Second Degree – Vehicle Code, a 10-year felony. Coupled with that charge was a Habitual Offender, Third Offense Notice, which doubles the penalty on the fleeing charge to a 20-year felony.

In addition, he pled no contest to two additional charges: Child Abuse – Fourth Degree, a 1-year misdemeanor and Operating While Intoxicated, a 93-day misdemeanor.

Pursuant to his plea, a charge of Driving with License Suspended, a 93-day misdemeanor will be dismissed upon sentencing.

Coil will be sentenced before Judge Viviano on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Melissa Simmons represented The People at this hearing.

“As I have repeatedly stated, fleeing from law enforcement is extremely dangerous, to the public and to the police attempting to enforce the law. We have seen so many incidents of innocent individuals killed by drivers fleeing from police. This case is additionally troubling because the defendant’s child was in the vehicle. We are grateful that the child was not injured,”  stated Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.

The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office represents the People. We are committed to achieving justice and following the laws of the State of Michigan. All individuals who are accused of a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
