Prosecutor Lucido to Host Countywide Telephone Town Hall on September 11 to Address the Relationship between Safe Gun Storage, Teen Gun Violence and Suicide Prevention
Mount Clemens, MI — Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido announced that his office received funding through the Safe Storage Initiative Grant from the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan (PAAM) to promote the Safe Gun Storage Saves Lives campaign.
The Safe Gun Storage Saves Lives program is specifically directed toward parents, guardians, and students in middle and high school, with the goal of educating firearm owners about the legal requirements of safe gun storage, its relationship to youth violence and suicide, and the consequences that may arise from unsecured firearms.
The Safe Gun Storage Saves Lives campaign launches during National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about mental health and preventing self-harm, especially among youth.
To kick off the campaign, the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office will reach out to 300,000 residents on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at 6:30 PM for a Telephone Town Hall hosted by Prosecutor Lucido and Dennis Liegghio, a nationally recognized suicide prevention advocate. Liegghio’s non-profit organization, KnowResolve, is dedicated to promoting mental health and preventing youth suicide through outreach, advocacy and education. Anyone who is suffering the loss of a loved one through suicide or may be contemplating self-harm is encouraged to call and participate in this event. Additionally, Prosecutor Lucido recommends and invites firearm owners to participate as he believes they should know Michigan’s safe storage requirements and the consequences that can follow from failure to follow the law. Individuals can register on the Prosecutor’s Office website to ensure they receive a call and can participate in the conversation.
Please answer the call on September 11 and help us make our community safer. For more information or to register for the Telephone Town Hall, visit www.macombgov.org/prosecutor.
As your Macomb County Prosecutor, I believe keeping our children safe is a responsibility we all share,” said Prosecutor Lucido. “Safe gun storage is not only about following the law; it is about protecting children from accidents, preventing youth violence, and reducing the risk of suicide. This campaign is designed to ensure every family has the tools and knowledge they need to keep their loved ones safe. Together, we can build a stronger, safer community where every child has the chance to grow and thrive.”
This initiative complements Prosecutor Lucido’s broader efforts to stop violence in schools and protect students. Prosecutor Lucido’s award-winning Knocking Violence Out of My School program, which received a 2025 Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties, empowers students to promote anti-violence messages through creative, peer-driven media.
Additionally, the Juvenile Unit of the Prosecutor’s Office regularly partners with area schools to educate students about crime, consequences, and how they can help keep their schools safe.
The Macomb County Prosecutor’s office represents the people. We are committed to achieving justice and following the laws of the State of Michigan. All that are accused of a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
