Press Release

Mount Clemens, MI – Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido announced that Daniel Shane Canales, a 16-year-old from Detroit, was bound over to circuit court in connection with a fatal vehicle crash that allegedly occurred while he was fleeing from police on Saturday, July 12, 2025.

On Monday, November 4, 2025, the preliminary examination for Canales, which began on September 29, 2025, concluded. Following the hearing, 41B District Court Judge Jacob Femminineo, Jr. bound Canales over to circuit court on all charges. The hearing was conducted by Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Jeffrey Hall.

Count 1:  Homicide - Murder - Second Degree, any term to life felony

Count 2:  Police Officer - Fleeing - First Degree - Vehicle Code, a 15-year felony

Count 3:  Operating - License Suspended, Revoked, Denied - Causing Death, a 15-year felony

Count 4:  Police Officer - Fleeing - Third Degree, Vehicle Code, a five-year felony

Count 5: Motor Vehicle - Unlawful Driving Away, a five-year felony

Canales was previously denied bond and is detained at the Juvenile Justice Center in Mt. Clemens, MI.

Canales will be arraigned on Monday, Nov. 17, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. before Judge James M. Maceroni at the Macomb County Circuit Court in Mt. Clemens, MI.

It is alleged that during the early morning hours of Saturday, July 12, 2025, Canales was driving a stolen car. Law enforcement activated lights and sirens to pull the vehicle over. Canales fled at a high rate of speed, eventually hitting another vehicle. The driver of the second vehicle, 28-year-old Alex Habib of Madison Heights, died from his injuries.

“Accountability matters, regardless of age. Our duty is to pursue justice, and that means proceeding with the full weight of the law,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.

Prosecutor Lucido called on Michigan lawmakers to come together in support of strong, bipartisan legislation to address the growing public safety threat of drivers who refuse to stop for law enforcement. He is pleased that progress has been made to impose tougher penalties on those who refuse to stop for police.

“Every time someone runs, they roll the dice with innocent lives. I want to end that gamble,” Prosecutor Lucido said.
