Jury trial adjourned for Detroit man charged with Second Degree Murder in traffic fatality, defense counsel is ill

Press Release

Mount Clemens, MI – Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido announced that the trial of Anthony Eugene-Douglas Grier, Jr., a 34-year-old Detroit man, was adjourned until July because his defense counsel is ill. Grier is charged with Second Degree Murder, Police Officer - Fleeing - First Degree, and Police Officer - Assaulting/Resisting/Obstructing in connection with his alleged driving of a vehicle that killed Wendy Drew, a 71-year-old Hazel Park resident in May of 2025.

On Tuesday, January 13, 2026, a Final Pre-Trial Conference was scheduled in the matter of Grier before the Honorable Matthew P. Sabaugh. Due to the illness of defense counsel, the Court adjourned the conference to Tuesday, February 17, 2026. As a result, the jury trial originally set for January 2026 has been rescheduled for Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., at the Macomb County Circuit Court in Mount Clemens, Michigan, which is the earliest date currently available.

Grier is charged with:

Count 1: Homicide - Murder - Second Degree, life or any term of years.

Count 2: Police Officer - Fleeing - First Degree - Vehicle Code, 15 years and/or $10,000.

Count 3: Police Officer - Assaulting/Resisting/Obstructing, 2 years and/or $2,000.

The charges stem from events on May 24, 2025, when Grier was allegedly observed operating a Chrysler 300 at approximately 70 miles per hour in a posted 40-mile-per-hour zone on Van Dyke Avenue in Warren. Officers with the Warren Police Department attempted to initiate a traffic stop by activating emergency lights and sirens. It is alleged that the Chrysler 300 failed to stop, disobeyed multiple traffic control signals, and reached speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour in areas with posted speed limits of 35 to 40 miles per hour.

It is alleged that the pursuit ended at the intersection of South Van Dyke and 9 Mile Road, where Grier’s vehicle entered the intersection and struck a vehicle traveling eastbound. The Chrysler 300 then collided with a second vehicle. The sole occupant of the first vehicle, Wendy Drew, was transported to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries. The sole occupant of the second vehicle was not injured.

“The alleged decision to flee law enforcement at extreme speeds placed innocent members of the public in grave danger. Our office is committed to ensuring that those responsible for such acts are held fully accountable through the judicial process. While nothing can undo this loss, we will continue to work tirelessly to pursue justice on behalf of the victim and her family," stated Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.

The Macomb County Prosecutor’s office represents the people. We are committed to following the laws of the State of Michigan and achieving justice with integrity. All defendants accused of a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
