Hazel Park father bound over to circuit court, alleged to owe over $12,000 in child support

Press Release

MOUNT CLEMENS, MI - Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido announced that 28-year-old Johnathon Cobb, II, of Hazel Park, MI, was bound over to the Macomb County Circuit Court on a charge of failing to pay child support, a felony, which carries a potential penalty of up to four years in prison. The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office charged Cobb after determining that he had the ability to pay, and no enforcement options remained or were effective.

On Monday, May 4, 2026, Cobb was scheduled for a Probable Cause Conference before Judge Jacob Femminineo, Jr. at the 41B District Court in Clinton Township, MI. At that hearing, Cobb waived his right to a Preliminary Exam and was bound over for trial. Cobb is scheduled to be arraigned before Judge Matthew S. Switalski in the Macomb County Circuit Court on Monday, May 18, 2026, at 1:30 p.m.

The charge stems from March 13, 2023, when Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Teri Lynn Dennings ordered Cobb to pay child support. Cobb allegedly failed to comply with the court’s order and accrued a child support arrearage of $12,200.48. There has  been one show cause hearing, and two bench warrants issued to obtain compliance.

“Child support is a basic obligation rooted in both law and responsibility—it is not a matter of choice. When a parent fails to meet that obligation, the real cost is borne by the child, whose stability and opportunities may be compromised. Ensuring consistent support is critical to a child’s overall well-being and future success. We are committed to enforcing these laws and will take decisive action to address noncompliance, because every child has a right to the resources they need to thrive,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.

Prosecutor Lucido proposed the creation of a Child Support Specialty Court, a pilot program aimed at helping parents behind on child support payments find work, pay arrears and avoid felony convictions. “Our goal is simple: get children the support they’re owed while addressing the barriers that keep parents from paying,” Lucido said. The pilot court has launched and is already working with some individuals as they seek acceptance into the program.

Under Lucido’s direction, the office has focused on securing compliance rather than simply filing charges. The Family Division of the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office oversees felony nonsupport cases where arrears exceed $5,000, payments have not been made for three consecutive months, and there is evidence that the noncustodial parent has the financial means to pay. Since 2022, the division successfully collected over $4.5 million for children from delinquent parents.
