GA man to be arraigned for allegedly scamming victim of over $50,000

Press Release

Mount Clemens, MI – Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido announced that 25-year-old Kelly Angel Umana of Georgia waived his right to a preliminary exam and will be arraigned on a charge of False Pretenses, a 15-year felony, in the Macomb County Circuit Court on Monday, August 4, 2025, at 1:30 PM before Judge Matthew P. Sabaugh.

It is alleged that, on or about Thursday, February 13, 2025, Umana posed as Social Security Administration worker to fraudulently induce a Shelby Township woman to transfer over $50,000 to his bank account. Through diligent investigation, Umana was discovered to be in Georgia. Assistant Prosecuting Attorney John Paul Hunt worked with Georgia law enforcement to extradite Umana and bring him to Michigan to face charges.

"My office is committed to ensuring that individuals who prey on others for personal gain are held fully accountable," said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido. "Thanks to the efforts of law enforcement across state lines, the defendant has been successfully extradited to face justice for allegedly defrauding a woman of more than $50,000."

"We thank our partner agencies for their swift cooperation in this extradition and reaffirm our commitment to pursuing justice across jurisdictional lines," Prosecutor Lucido added.

The allegations against Umana illustrate why Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido makes it a priority to continue his efforts to protect Macomb County citizens from becoming the victims of scams. He regularly meets with Macomb County seniors to educate and forewarn them against those who prey on a vulnerable community.

Prosecutor Lucido’s program is called S.C.A.M.S., Stopping Crimes Against Macomb Seniors. Seniors receive valuable information such as how to protect themselves from becoming victims of fraud. Fraud can take many forms, including banking, phishing, and consumer transactions. Theft schemes targeting seniors include identity theft, telemarketing scams, mail and internet fraud, and home improvement and caregiver theft.
