Eastpointe man facing serious charges after allegedly attempting to stab police officer with a screwdriver

Press Release

Mt. Clemens, MI – Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido announced that a 32-year-old Eastpointe man was arraigned on serious charges including Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm related to his arrest for shoplifting.

It is alleged that on Sunday, Oct. 5, 2025, Sterling Heights Police were called to assist at the Walmart Store on Van Dyke in Sterling Heights, MI. It is alleged that Joshua Mills exited the store without paying for merchandise. When offices identified themselves, Mills ran and an officer pursued him. The officer deployed his taser, striking Mills. As Mills was lying on his back, an officer attempted to place him under arrest. Mills quickly sat up and attempted to stab the officer in the face with a screwdriver. He narrowly missed stabbing the officer. After a tussle, Mills was taken into custody.

On Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2025, Mills was arraigned in the 41st District Court in Sterling Heights, MI before Magistrate Jean M. Cloud. Mills was arraigned on the following charges:

1 COUNT:        Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm less than Murder, a 10-year felony

2 COUNTS:      Police Officer – Assaulting/Resisting/Obstructing, a 2-year felony

1 COUNT:        Retail Fraud, Second-Degree, a 1-year misdemeanor

Magistrate Cloud set Mills’ bond at $500,000 cash/surety. If released, he must wear a GPS tether.

Mills is scheduled for a Probable Cause Conference on Monday, Oct. 20, 2025, and a Preliminary Exam on Monday, Oct. 27, 2025, both at 1 p.m., before Judge Kimberley A. Wiegand at the 41st District Court in Sterling Heights, MI.

Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido stated, “This kind of blatant disrespect for law enforcement will not be tolerated. When an officer is carrying out a lawful arrest and is met with violence, it strikes at the heart of public safety. The defendant’s decision to allegedly turn a routine misdemeanor arrest into a life-threatening confrontation is unacceptable, and our office will pursue this case to the fullest extent of the law.”

The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office represents the People. We are committed to achieving justice and following the laws of the State of Michigan. All that are accused of a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
