Detroit man convicted of Involuntary Manslaughter, crashed while fleeing police, killed other driver

Mount Clemens, MI – Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido announced that Anthony Eugene-Douglas Grier, Jr., a 34-year-old Detroit man, was convicted today of Involuntary Manslaughter, First Degree Fleeing Police Officers, and Assaulting/Resisting/ Obstructing Police Officers by a Macomb County jury. 

Grier’s jury trial began on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, before the Honorable Matthew P. Sabaugh of the Macomb County Circuit Court. The jury deliberated 5 hours before returning with a verdict of guilty on the following counts:

Grier was convicted of:

Count 1: Involuntary Manslaughter, a felony punishable up to 15 years/$7,500 

Count 2: Police Officer - Fleeing - First Degree - Vehicle Code, 15 years and/or $10,000

Count 3: Police Officer - Assaulting/Resisting/Obstructing, 2 years and/or $2,000.

The charges stem from events on May 24, 2025, when Grier was observed driving a Chrysler 300 at approximately 70 miles per hour in a posted 40-mile-per-hour zone on Van Dyke Avenue in Warren. Warren Police attempted a traffic stop by activating emergency lights and sirens. The the Chrysler 300 failed to stop, disobeyed multiple traffic control signals, and reached speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour in areas with posted speed limits of 35 to 40 miles per hour.

The pursuit ended at the intersection of South Van Dyke and 9 Mile Road, where Grier’s vehicle entered the intersection and crashed into a vehicle traveling eastbound. The Chrysler 300 then collided with a second vehicle. The sole occupant of the first vehicle, Wendy Drew, was transported to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries. The sole occupant of the second vehicle was not injured.

"I am grateful to the jury for its verdict. However, no verdict can heal the profound loss and grief endured by Wendy Drew’s family. I hope they find some measure of comfort in knowing that the defendant will serve many years in prison for his reckless and irresponsible decisions.

“I again urge the Michigan Senate to take up the bill already passed by the House and vote to enact mandatory minimum prison sentences for individuals who flee from law enforcement. We must ensure there are meaningful consequences that make people think twice before hitting the gas and putting innocent lives at risk.

“I encourage everyone to contact their state senators and demand a vote on this bill," stated Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.

Grier will be sentenced by Judge Sabaugh on Wednesday, August 26, 2026 at 9:00 am.
