Detroit man bound over on charges related to alleged hit and run of pedestrian

Mount Clemens, Mich. - Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido announced 25-year-old Earnest Square, of Detroit, was bound over on charges related to an alleged hit and run incident on Van Dyke Avenue in Warren, Michigan. 

On Tuesday, August  4, 2026, a Preliminary Exam was held for Square before visiting Judge Edward Servitto in the 37th District Court in Warren, Michigan. At the conclusion of the Exam, Judge Servitto bound Square over as charged on the following counts:

• Failure to Stop at the Scene of an Accident – When at Fault - Resulting in Death, a 15-year felony
• Operating – License Suspended, Revoked, Denied – Causing Death, a 15-year felony.

These are the maximum charges available under the law based upon the evidence presented to date.

Over the objection of Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Nathan Wilson, the Court granted a defense motion for bond modification. Judge Servitto reduced Square’s bond from $250,000 to $50,000 cash/surety. If Square is able to post bond and is released, he must wear a GPS tether.

“Remaining at the scene of a collision is not only required by law, but also a fundamental responsibility that ensures help can arrive quickly and that the facts can be fully understood. My office will seek justice for the victim and her family,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.

It is alleged that on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at approximately 4:00 a.m., Square was driving a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu southbound on Van Dyke Avenue, north of 9 Mile Road, when he struck a pedestrian. After the collision, he allegedly failed to stop at the scene, render aid, or contact emergency authorities.

Law enforcement responded to the area after receiving calls from passing motorists. The victim, a resident of Warren, sustained serious injuries. She was provided emergency medical assistance at the scene and transported to St. John Hospital in Detroit. She succumbed to her injuries on Sunday, May 17, 2026.

It is further alleged that Square never acquired a valid driver’s license.

Square is scheduled to be arraigned before Macomb County Circuit Court Judge James M. Maceroni on Monday, August 17, 2026, at 1:30 p.m.
