Clinton Township man sentenced after murder conviction to 40-60 years

Press Release

Mount Clemens, MI – Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido announced that Jaion Barnes, a 25-year-old man from Clinton Township, was sentenced following the February jury conviction for the murder of 23-year-old Tianna Ross, his girlfriend and the mother of his child.

On Thursday, March 26, 2026, Barnes was sentenced by Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Matthew P. Sabaugh. On Count 1, Homicide – Murder – Second Degree, Barnes received a sentence of 40 to 60 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections. On Count 2, Weapons – Felony Firearm, he was sentenced to 2 years, to be served consecutively and prior to the sentence for Count 1. For Count 3, Weapons – Firearms – Possession by a Felon, Barnes was sentenced to 365 days in the Macomb County Jail, with credit for 800 days served.

Additionally, Barnes was prohibited from contacting the complaining witness and was ordered to pay over $9,000 in restitution.

Assistant Prosecuting Attorneys Elizabeth Abbo and Carrie Seward prosecuted the case on behalf of The People.

“Today’s outcome delivers a measure of justice for a horrific crime. The defendant will serve a lengthy prison sentence. His actions took the life of his girlfriend, the mother of his child, and in doing so, forever altered the course of multiple lives, including that of a child now left without either parent. This was a tragic and senseless act, and our thoughts remain with the child and the loved ones who will endure this loss for the rest of their lives,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.

On January 15, 2024, Tianna Ross arrived at Barnes’s residence to deliver their child to him. He shot her multiple times in front of their 2-year-old child and fled. He later turned himself in to the authorities.
