Mount Clemens, MI -  A 29-year-old man from Canada was arraigned in connection with starting a fire at his girlfriend’s home in Warren.

It is alleged that on Sunday, September 22, 2024, Jesse Dennis Hayden Humphrey, set his girlfriend’s home on fire after an argument.  The fire completely destroyed the home, killing the two cats inside. The victim was not home at the time of the fire.  Humphrey fled the scene of the fire but was later arrested in Warren.

Jesse Dennis Hayden Humphrey was charged with two counts of Second Degree Arson, 20 year felonies, and Killing Animals in the Third Degree, a four year felony.  Under Michigan law, intentionally killing animals is a four-year felony and that is the highest possible charge for animal deaths.

Humphrey was arraigned in 37th Warren District Court by Warren District Court Judge Michael Chupa where bond was set at $500,000 cash/surety only.  If released the defendant is to wear a GPS tether, not leave the state of Michigan and have no contact with the victim. A Probable Cause Hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, October 8, 2024 at 8:45am and a Preliminary Exam is scheduled for Tuesday, October 15, 2024 at 8:45 am by Warren District Court Judge Suzanne Faunce.

"I am committed to holding those accountable who commit senseless acts of violence and destruction. This individual’s alleged actions resulted in the tragic loss of two innocent pets and caused irreparable harm. This act of cruelty and recklessness will not be tolerated," said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.

The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office represents the People.  We are committed to achieving justice and following the laws of the State of Michigan. All that are accused of a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
