Mount Clemens, MI - A 44-year-old father has been arraigned in connection with a single car traffic crash that happened near 21 Mile Road and Tilch Rd. in Macomb Township.

It is alleged that on Friday, August 30, 2024, Michael Shaway was driving his F150 truck when he hit a guardrail and veered off the road into a ravine with his 13-year-old son in the vehicle.  The boy suffered serious injuries in the crash and is in stable condition at a local hospital.  Officers allegedly found multiple bottles of prescription medication and illegal drugs in the father’s possession.

Michael Shaway was charged with Child Abuse in the Second Degree, a ten year felony, and Possession of a Controlled Substance less than 25g, a four year felony. He was also charged as a habitual second offender.

Yesterday, Michael Shaway was arraigned in Shelby Township District Court where Magistrate James VerPloeg set bond at $50,000 cash/surety only, no 10%.  A Probable Cause Hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, September 24, 2024 at 2:00 pm by District Court Judge Douglas Shepherd.

“As a parent, the defendant had a responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of his child. The reckless actions that led to this serious crash, coupled with the presence of illegal substances, are deeply concerning. While we are relieved that the child is in stable condition, we will pursue justice to the fullest extent of the law for the harm caused,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.

The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office represents the People. We are committed to achieving justice and following the laws of the State of Michigan. All that are accused of a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
