Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office Hosts Events to Protect Seniors from Scams

Mount Clemens, MI - The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office is ramping up efforts to educate local seniors on scam prevention through dedicated events and informative booklets. Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido has spearheaded a series of special events and developed a comprehensive guide titled "S.C.A.M.S. - Stopping Crimes Against Macomb Seniors,” designed to protect seniors from increasingly sophisticated fraud schemes.

The goal of these initiatives is to promote safety and empower seniors to recognize and avoid common scams. Many fraudsters target older adults, posing as authorities, such as police officers or bank representatives, or as family members in distress. Scammers use tactics like phishing emails, phone calls that mimic relatives’ voices using artificial intelligence, and phony flyers advertising false services. Prosecutor Lucido’s office reminds seniors never to share personal information over the phone or email with unknown sources and encourages them to be vigilant against these types of scams.

“The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office is dedicated to safeguarding the well-being of our seniors,” said Prosecutor Lucido. “Through free presentations and our S.C.A.M.S. booklets, we provide vital information to help our older community members avoid being taken advantage of. Our mission is to protect your golden years and keep you safe.”

Heather Esposito, Outreach Coordinator for the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office, shared her enthusiasm for the initiative. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see our seniors engage at these events and walk away with new tools to protect themselves. My parents and their friends always look forward to the presentations, and each time, they uncover insights that genuinely make a difference in their lives,” Esposito said.

These valuable  S.C.A.M.S. booklets will be available at the upcoming Senior Expo USA in Warren on Thursday, November 14, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Warren Community Center, 5460 Arden Ave., Warren, MI 48092.
