Former Detroit Police Officer Arraigned in Connection with a Moving Violation Causing Death

Mount Clemens, MI - A former Detroit Police Officer has been arraigned for allegedly causing the death of a 27-year-old man following a traffic violation.

It is alleged that on Friday, August 16, 2024, Corey Siquan Jones, age 28, stopped at a red light in Roseville, then proceeded through it while it was still red striking a motorcyclist who was traveling lawfully through the green light.  Evan Newman died at the scene. Jones resigned from the Detroit Police Department in December 2024.

Roseville police presented the case to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday, February 12, 2025. That same day, the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office authorized a charge of a Moving Violation Causing Death, a one-year misdemeanor.

Michigan law provides for Moving Violation Causing Death, a one-year misdemeanor, and Reckless Driving Causing Death, a 15-year felony, but nothing in between when there is no proof of drugs or alcohol.

According to the police report, a portable breathalyzer test and field sobriety tests of Jones showed he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs as he was on his way to work that day.   The prosecutor’s office determined he was not driving recklessly, was not driving with willful and wanton disregard, nor was he driving with more than simple carelessness.

On Friday, February 21, 2025, Jones was arraigned in Roseville District Court where District Court Judge Alyia Hakim set a $5,000 personal bond.  A Probable Cause Conference is scheduled on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at 8:30 a.m. via Zoom.

"This tragic case is a reminder of how a simple traffic violation can have devastating consequences. A life was lost, and a family is now left to grieve an unimaginable loss. Our Major Crimes Unit thoroughly reviewed this matter, and the charge reflects the appropriate course of justice under the law.  However, no legal outcome can ever replace a loved one. If you believe stricter penalties are necessary to prevent future tragedies, we encourage you to contact your legislators and advocate for change," said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.

The Macomb County Prosecutor’s office represents the People.  We are committed to achieving justice and following the laws of the State of Michigan. All those accused of a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
