Detroit Police Officer Arraigned in Connection with a Traffic Violation, Killing One

Mount Clemens, MI - A Detroit Police Officer has been arraigned for allegedly causing the death of a 27-year-old man.

It is alleged that on Friday, August 16, 2024, Corey Siquan Jones, age 28, drove through a red light and was struck by a motorcyclist who was traveling lawfully through the green light.  Evan Newman died at the scene.

Roseville Police Department presented the case to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday, February 12, 2025. The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office authorized charges the same day.  Jones was charged with a Moving Violation Causing Death, a one-year misdemeanor.  On Friday, February 21, 2025, Jones was arraigned in Roseville District Court where District Court Judge Alyia Hakim set a $5,000 personal bond.  A Probable Cause Conference is scheduled on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at 8:30 a.m. via Zoom.

"Police officers are sworn to uphold the law, but they are also bound by it. No one is above the law, and our justice system must apply equally to all," said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.
