Detroit Man Arraigned for Owing Over $11,000 in Unpaid Child Support
Mount Clemens, MI - A 29-year-old man has been arraigned for failing to pay child support for his minor child. After a thorough investigation, the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office determined that he has the ability to pay but chose not to cooperate with our office on payment options.
On Wednesday, February 15, 2023, Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Rachel Rancilio ordered Kahlil Smith to pay child support for his minor child. After failing to comply with the court’s order and accruing over $11,000 in child support arrearages, the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office charged Smith with Failure to Pay Child Support, a four-year felony.
On Thursday, March 13, 2025, Smith was arraigned in the 41B District Court in Clinton Township before Magistrate Ryan Zemke, who set the bond at $2,818. A Probable Cause Hearing is scheduled for Monday, March 24, 2025, at 8:30 am in front of District Court Judge Jacob Femminineo, Jr.
"Failing to pay child support not only harms the child but also places an unfair burden on the other parent. Our office will continue to hold individuals accountable to ensure that children receive the financial support they deserve,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.
The Family Division of the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office oversees felony nonsupport cases where arrears exceed $5,000, payments have not been made for three consecutive months, and there is evidence the noncustodial parent has the financial means to pay. The division’s primary goal is to secure financial support for children while ensuring justice is served.
