Mount Clemens, MI - A 60-year-old Detroit man was arraigned in connection with a robbery and carjacking at a St. Clair Shores Kroger parking lot.

It is alleged that on Friday, February 21, 2025, Eddie Leon Gaines attempted to rob a woman by taking her purse.  A customer intervened and struck him with her shopping bag.  Gaines ran and entered into the driver’s seat of a running vehicle in the parking lot.  Gaines drove off with a male victim in the passenger seat.  Gaines demanded the male victim’s money and threatened to shoot him.  The victim was eventually able to take the keys out of the ignition and stab Gaines with a fork.  Gaines fled to a nearby Walgreens where he was apprehended by St. Clair Shores police officers.

The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office charged Gaines with Carjacking, a life felony, Unlawful Imprisonment, a 15-year felony, and Unarmed Robbery, a 15-year felony. Today, Gaines was arraigned in 40th St. Clair Shores District Court where District Court Judge Joseph Oster set bond at $250,000 cash/surety, no 10%. If bond is made, Gaines is to wear a GPS tether and have no contact with Kroger, any victims, or witnesses.  A Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at 8:30 am and a Preliminary Exam is scheduled for Friday, March 7, 2025, at 8:30 am by District Court Judge Mark Fatarcangeli.

"The alleged actions of this individual were not only reckless but a direct threat to public safety. I am grateful that law enforcement quickly apprehended the suspect. I commend the St. Clair Shores Police Department for their professionalism and dedication to making our communities safer," said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.

The Macomb County Prosecutor’s office represents the People.  We are committed to achieving justice and following the laws of the State of Michigan. All those accused of a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
