Detroit Father Arraigned for Allegedly Owing More Than $22K in Back Child Support

Mount Clemens, MI - A 38-year-old Detroit man has been arraigned on charges of failing to pay child support for his three minor children.
On Friday, May 17, 2019, Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Rachel Rancilio ordered Demetrius Morris to pay $552.00 per month in child support. Morris allegedly owes $22,967.15 in unpaid support. He has had two show cause hearings and two bench warrants issued.
The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office charged Morris with Failing to Pay Child Support, a felony punishable by up to four years in prison. On Friday, November 22, 2024, Morris was arraigned in the 41B District Court in Clinton Township before Magistrate Ryan Zemke, who set bond at $5,741.00. A Probable Cause Hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. before District Court Judge Carrie Fuca.
“Failing to pay child support is not just a legal issue; it’s a matter of ensuring that children have the resources they need to thrive. While we understand that some individuals face hardships, accountability is essential. Our focus is on upholding justice and supporting families by ensuring parents meet their obligations to their children,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.
The Family Division of the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office handles felony nonsupport cases where the noncustodial parent owes more than $5,000 in child support. To qualify for review, the case must involve arrears exceeding $5,000, a failure to pay for three consecutive months, and evidence that the noncustodial parent has the ability to pay. The goal is to secure financial support for children from both parents while upholding justice.
