Macomb County established the Blue Economy strategy to highlight its world-class Great Lakes Coastal Shoreline, showcase its access to the Clinton River and enhance its natural water resources in an economic and ecologically sustainable manner. The result was the establishment of three primary objectives of the Macomb Blue Economy:
Environmental stewardship:
Through continued maintenance, conservation and enhancement, we look to protect our precious natural spaces.
Economic development:
For water-based businesses, such as recreational boating, sport fishing and paddling. Learn more.
Quality of life:
For residents and visitors and assisting communities in redeveloping their waterfront areas. Learn more
Macomb County has several ongoing projects that will continue to protect and preserve its precious waterways. They include:
- The Lake St. Clair Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area, or CISMA. The program is a collaborative effort to enhance ecosystem functions and enrich ecosystem services through invasive species prevention, detection, management and outreach in Macomb and St. Clair counties.
- The Clinton River Watershed Council, which protects the land area that collects and channels rainfall and snowmelt, which flows into larger bodies of water and eventually Lake St. Clair.
- The Huron to Erie Alliance for Research and Training, or HEART, Freshwater Center. The alliance addresses concerns in the Huron to Erie watersheds.
- The Lake St. Clair Tourism Initiative, which keeps water lovers updated on events in and around Lake St. Clair.
- Clinton River Spillway Vision is to serve as a guide and tool for the various agencies to
continue to move forward on improvements to the Spillway property in a coordinated manner.
