Volunteer opportunities with Community Food Bank of Macomb County

Hands in the air

We're so glad you're here! Together we have the power to give hope by feeding those in need. The dedication of your time and efforts to make the place you live a better one are appreciated! We are thankful for your contribution to the mission of our food bank and our pantry partners. With help from volunteers like you, we are feeding over 20,000 individuals monthly.

Our food sorting takes place at the warehouse and generally is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays for a period of time not to exceed 2 hours.  We are seeking volunteers to sort and check dates on our donated food items.  2 of our largest food drives-early May for the Postal Carrier’s Food Drive and early November for the Scouting for Food and right around the holidays at the end of the year are our busiest times for donations.

Who is a food sorting volunteer?

You!  We need someone that can lift and bend, as our food items are in large totes.  It does require some lifting of up to 20lbs.

How do I start?

  1. Contact the main office: 586-469-6004

We have several offsite locations where our mobile food trucks set up and deliver food directly to consumers.  Some of our distribution sites include Mt Clemens, Warren, Center Line and Memphis. These events are generally on a Tuesday or Thursday from about 9 am - noon.  Consumers arrive either on a drive through or walk up basis.

Who is a food distribution volunteer?

You!  We need someone that can lift up to 30lbs, as our food boxes and bags of produce need to be placed into vehicles.  Occasionally there is inclement weather and distributions are outside so please dress accordingly!  It is also required that you complete Civil Rights training.  We can help facilitate that! You must also provide your transportation directly to the distribution location.

Food drives and donation drives are a significant asset in the fight against hunger.  You can arrange for a food or donation drive and turn it into what ever type of event you’d like!  These collection events bring out the creativity in our neighbors! We’ve seen competitions to see who can collect the most food, collections with themes like sporting events/season openers, mac and cheese drives, holiday themes, in honor or memory of someone who was passionate in the movement to end hunger, scavenger hunts that end in food collection.  There are limitless ways to make feeding our neighbors as fun as they are important.

Who is a food drive/donation hero?

You!  We are always in need of food or monetary donations to support our ongoing efforts to feed our community.

How do I start?

  • Pick your dates-research to pick dates that will best accommodate your group

Remember that someone will need to collect all the donations and bring them to the warehouse

  • Recruit your team-get others involved to build excitement and encourage competition
  • Set your goal-goals give participants something to strive towards and allow you to gauge your progress
  • Get specific-be sure to mention glass doesn’t transport well and high demand items include cereal, soups, peanut butter, jelly, pasta and pasta sauce, canned proteins like tuna and chicken, macaroni and cheese, granola bars, and canned fruits and vegetables
  • You can develop your own flyers or use one of ours to get you started!
