Winter Hazards Awareness Week: November 3-9, 2024

Winter storms can bring extreme cold, freezing rain, ice, snow, high winds, or a combination of all of these conditions. Planning and preparing can make a big difference in safety and resiliency in the wake of a winter storm.

During this week, we join with the Michigan State Police and local and State Emergency Management Coordinators to encourage all families to learn more about winter safety and the importance of winter emergency preparedness.

Residents can prepare for severe winter weather by building an emergency preparedness kit, which includes:

  • Extra blankets and clothes
  • Enough nonperishable food items and water to last three days per person
  • First aid kit
  • Medications
  • Pet supplies
  • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather radio
  • Portable radio
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
