MCDR, in partnership with Macomb Township, Shelby Township, Washington Township and Ray Township, is planning to reconstruct and modernize the intersection of 26 Mile Road and Hayes Road.

Purpose: The planned project is anticipated to promote safer turning movements, improve pavement conditions, reduce congestion and increase travel time reliability for the motorists and businesses that rely on the intersection. The need for the project includes, but is not limited to:

  • Enhancing vehicular safety
  • Reducing congestion
  • Deteriorating pavement conditions
  • Community priority

What changes will be made?

The project includes adding turn lanes to three legs of the intersection at 26 Mile Road and Hayes Road, new pavement, the installation of four mast arms with new traffic signals and signs, updated pavement markings and restoration work.

How will the project benefit the community?

With the proposed updates to the intersection, the project is anticipated to enhance vehicular safety and traffic flow and improve pavement conditions. The project is based on community needs and is a result of planning and coordination between the Department of Roads, Macomb Township, Shelby Township, Washington Township and Ray Township.

Are there environmental impacts associated with the project?

No significant environmental impacts are anticipated. The project is undergoing a National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) review since the project includes federal funding.

Will homes or properties be affected by the project?

Some right of way (ROW) acquisition is needed but no full property acquisitions or direct impacts to homes are anticipated. Most of the anticipated ROW is limited to small strips of land near the road. Adjacent property owners will be contacted directly by the project team.

Who are the community stakeholders?

Community stakeholders include nearby residents, property owners, local schools, emergency services and businesses that use the 26 Mile Road and Hayes Road corridors.
